On 3rd July 22, Sunday morning all young farmers of Be a Farmer program, Monsoon batch-2, came to the Organo Et School Children’s Farm Campus for the second farm session. Their excitement was evident as they all rushed to their respective farm patches as soon as they reached the farm.
The session started with OES farm coach Shilpa Teja getting to know the participants whom she will take along on this 2-month long experiential farm journey. Garima introduced Shilpa to all the parents and the kids. Kids were eager to start the day’s activity.
The saplings sown during the last session looked healthy and gaining ground well. All the radish seeds sown, germinated well. Shilpa suggested thinning as the first activity for the day. She demonstrated thinning by first identifying healthy saplings amongst the new radish saplings. Then the few not so healthy ones were to be plucked out. The participants followed their coach in thinning their farm patches. Next, they learnt weeding by uprooting the unwanted plant growth from their patches. Having watered the area where the green leafys were sown, all the kids gathered near Shilpa to learn Jeevamrutham making. Jeevamrutham is a biofertilizer which is made by fermenting a mixture of cow dung, cow urine, jaggery and besan some soil in water. Kids made it in individual buckets and left it to ferment at the OES farm.
Next came the theory part, Shilpa explained living soil with the help of a handout. She asked all of them to get a handful of soil to observe and smell. This was an interactive session with participants taking interest in sharing lots of facts about soil.
Finally, another activity for the young farmers was lined up, harvesting ladyfingers from the OES farm patches. All of them ran to the ladyfinger plant patches to pick as many ladyfingers as they could manage. Their bags had fresh ladyfingers and some radish microgreens, which gave them immense satisfaction. This brought the session to an end, and the young farmers left the OES farm.
