On a pleasant monsoon Sunday, all the 'Be a Farmer' participants came to the OES children's farm to find the farm in a festive look. On 7 Aug 22, OES was prepared for a rainy day as per the weather forecast. It being a rainy day, fun rain activity was planned for the day.
As the young farmers started weeding their farm patches, the sky got clearer, and clouds started drifting away. The planned activity for the day was natural pest control solution application, buttermilk solution spraying. Shilpa our farm coach explained how buttermilk is prepared, and why it is helpful in controlling diseases. Buttermilk solution application also boasts growth and flowering in vegetable crops. All the participants filled up their spray bottles with the buttermilk solution provided by OES and went ahead to spray on the plants in their farm patches.
Also, the tomato plants needed support as they had outgrown the previous height of the rope arrangement. So all the participants restaked by tying another rope, higher than the previous one. And the tomato plants looked smarter again!
Finally, Shilpa explained the importance and relevance of natural pest control methods. Kids were shown 3 different kinds of natural pest control solutions derived from naturally available ingredients. The first being Jeevamrutham which is made using cow dung, cow urine, besan flour, jaggery, some soil, and diluted with water. The second one is Buttermilk solution derived by fermenting curd with lots of water. The third being Waste decomposer, which is a fermented solution made with a bio-enzyme culture, diluted with water. She also mentioned why naturally made solutions should be used for keeping the natural environment safe and chemical-free.
OES had planned a fun activity for all the 'Be a Farmer' participants, a Clay rendition by famous clay artist Mr. Manpreet Singh Nishter. Children immensely enjoyed making birds and cups out of the soft clay. All of them happily owned their creations and went home dancing and laughing.
