On 22 May 2022, Sunday, the Mandala Garden at OES farm saw children come in at 7:30 am for fun farm session.
Their farm coach Garima Goel had planned to introduce a few farming tasks to them while making it fun for them to practice at their farm sections of mandala Garden.
As the children started getting ready for the activity, they took out the farm tools and their footwear to be comfortable. All of them picked up the spinach seeds kept presoaked for them in earthen diyas. They went to the Mandala and started preparing the soil using the rake. Then they segregated the pebbles and stones from the soil and leveled the soil bed. Having done that, they spread the Spinach seeds by the broadcasting method in this prepared bed. Then they spread the loose soil over these seeds just enough to cover the seeds. Next came the mulching part, followed by watering carefully. They also did weeding in the patch they had sowed seeds last weekend. They were told to look for the odd one out and uproot the same.
Once the sowing was done, they all learnt to make jeevamrutham, a biofertilizer used in natural farming. this they made by mixing cowdung, cow urine, jaggary, besan flour to a slurry. This slurry is then diluted with water in the ratio of 1:5. This solution is fermented for 7-10 days to let the microbial activity flourish.
Having finished making Jeevamrutham, they were shown some seeds for the seed identification activity. They were shown different types of seeds like Bottle guard, Bitter guard, carrots, coriander, spinach, and beetroot. They tried to remember these seeds for identification later. They enjoyed this part a lot. After the session was over, kids ran around and played for some more time at the farm. The weather was really pleasant and the air really fresh on this Sunday morning.
