Setting up and running Classroom Farms

Organo Et School has taken a pioneering initiative by launching Hyderabad’s 1st classroom farms at The Shri Ram Academy School. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated management and educational team at The Shri Ram Academy for embracing our shared belief in the profound benefits of hands-on engagement with soil-based activities and plant cultivation for children's holistic development.

Their commitment to integrating agriculture into the school curriculum perfectly aligns with our unwavering dedication to OES's safe food curriculum. This collaborative effort, orchestrated by OES teachers/farm coaches and The Shri Ram Academy educators, marks the beginning of an exciting journey ahead.

OES’s Be A Farmer Program

On February 27th, we inaugurated the OES Be A Farmer program at The Shri Ram Academy school by introducing grow bags in the balconies adjacent to their classrooms. Over 40 students from the 2nd grade embarked on a 5-6 week journey to learn natural leafy greens cultivation.

Each child received a grow bag, soil mix, tools, and a farm log book to document their experiences. While children from Section 2A engaged in farming activities, those from 2B delved into understanding soil texture using mason jars.

Soil Loosening and Seed Sowing

During the farming session, Mrs. Sreedevi Ande, their farming coach, initiated by explaining the planned activities. The children were instructed on soil preparation and the broadcasting method of seed sowing. Following Mrs. Sreedevi's guidance, they loosened the soil in their grow bags and sowed Methi & Coriander seeds using the broadcasting technique.

Understanding soil texture

Meanwhile, children from 2B explored different soil types prevalent in India, observing the characteristics of black soil, red soil, and sandy soil. They actively participated in the mason jar test demonstration to discern soil types and gained insights into soil composition. Upon completion of both sessions, they exchanged experiences, thoroughly enjoying both activities.

Gratitude and Acknowledgements

We extend our gratitude to Mrs. Aishwarya Kurra, Managing Director, Mrs. Sunita, Mrs. Swetha, and Mrs. Sudha for their unwavering support in realizing this endeavor. We also thank all the teachers of PYP 2 for their invaluable assistance during the sessions. Additionally, our appreciation goes to the facilities and gardening team of Shri Ram Academy for their indispensable support.

 Nurturing Eco-Warriors

Through initiatives like the "Be A Farmer'' experiential learning program on Safe Food Systems and Natural Farming, Organo Et School is showcasing the tangible advantages of integrating environmental education into school curricula. As we witness the positive outcomes of such initiatives in nurturing environmentally conscious students and promoting sustainable practices, it is imperative for more schools to embrace similar initiatives.
