The graduation day of the Be a Farmer program at Sancta Maria International School on 20th March 2024, marked an exciting moment for the students as they eagerly anticipated harvesting the results of their dedicated efforts.
The vegetable garden at school was bliss to eye with the lush green leafy grown by the 4th grade students.
To facilitate the harvest session, the OES team, consisting of experts in the field, visited the school premises to guide the 140 participating students through the process. This collaborative effort ensured that each student had the opportunity to actively engage in the final stages of the program, reinforcing their understanding of safe food systems and the importance of hands-on experience in farming.
Harvesting
The Methi, Amaranthus, Spinach, and Coriander in the school's vegetable garden have reached full maturity and are ready for harvest.
The students were divided into 4 batches and the session was commenced by gardening expert Ms Sreedevi Ande.
Ms. Sreedevi demonstrated different harvesting techniques, including uprooting and chopping, allowing the students to learn the methods for gathering the produce.
The children eagerly embraced the opportunity to put these techniques into practice, expressing their joy and enthusiasm as they worked together to collect the fresh produce.
After the successful harvest, the bounty of leafy greens was sent to the school cafeteria, where it would be used to prepare nutritious meals for the students. The harvesting session was a memorable and rewarding experience for the students, reinforcing their knowledge of safe food systems while also providing them with a real sense of success and pride in their work.
Filling farm log book
Under the guidance of Ms Sandya Reddi another batches started filling out their farm log book. Understanding the weather conditions, growth observations and farm expenses adds depth to their understanding of farming and sustainability. Writing about their reflections on the farming program allows them to express their thoughts and insights gained throughout the month-long journey of growing vegetables. By documenting their journey, students not only reinforce their understanding of farming concepts but also engage in meaningful reflection on their experiences.
Graduation ceremony
Lastly, the graduation ceremony, presided over by Ms. Meena Murugappan, a proud moment for both the students and the faculty.
Being awarded with certificates for completing the Be A Farmer program is a significant achievement, and capturing the moment with photographs adds to the memories they will cherish.
The successful conclusion of the harvest session marked a significant milestone in the Be A Farmer program, highlighting the students' dedication to learning about sustainable farming practices and promoting a healthy food environment within their school community.
