A group of students from Sreenidhi International School embarked on an educational visit to Organo Antharam on 25th February 2025, an eco-conscious community. The objective of this field visit was to explore the principles of sustainable urban planning and understand how human choices impact environmental and community sustainability.
Introduction to Sustainability
The students arrived at Organo Eco Habitat at approximately 10:30 AM and were greeted by the Organo Et School (OES) team. The session commenced with an introduction to sustainability principles, with a specific focus on Sapthapatha—the seven fundamental strands of sustainability that guide the community’s eco-friendly lifestyle.
Following the introduction, the students were divided into two groups and directed toward two key learning zones—the netted house and the solar-panel-equipped parking area.
Exploring Sustainability in Action
One group explored the solar panel installation above the parking spaces, where they learned about solar energy generation, its practical applications, and its role in reducing carbon footprints.
Simultaneously, the other group visited the netted house, an advanced controlled-environment farming system, where they observed drip irrigation technology in action. Here, they saw how vegetables are cultivated naturally with minimal water usage, reducing resource consumption while maintaining high agricultural yield. The groups later switched places to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.
A Walk Through Nature and Sustainable Living Spaces
After that, the students went on a guided tour of the residential clusters to observe how well urban living and environment coexist.
They saw a variety of plants as they made their way through the walkways, as well as nearby farms that were cultivating mango trees, sunflowers, and other crops. This event demonstrated how residential neighbourhoods and farms may coexist in a sustainable ecology.
Learning at Rurban Hive
Their next stop was Rurban Hive, the community’s social hub. Here, they explored the evaporative cooling system, a natural temperature-regulation mechanism where water drips down specialized structures, and the moving air generates a cooling breeze. They also observed air tunnels, which optimize passive cooling within the space—an eco-friendly alternative to conventional air conditioning.
Additionally, the students saw an innovative textured wall at Rurban Living, constructed using mud plaster and embedded glass bottles. The mud plaster provides thermal insulation, keeping the space warm in winter and cool in summer, demonstrating a low-energy, climate-responsive design approach.
In the Conference Hall at Rurban Hive, Ms. Kalyani, a sustainability expert from OES, delivered an engaging presentation on Sustainability and Urban Systems. She started with global population growth and its environmental implications. She elaborated on the Sapthapatha philosophy and emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability into urban planning.
The students then participated in an interactive activity where they designed their own sustainable neighborhoods, applying the principles they had learned.
Exploring Sustainable Architecture
The next stop was God’s Own Office, where students observed how locally sourced materials were used in construction. They learned how the strategic placement of water bodies and open spaces helps in natural cooling and ventilation, making the environment comfortable and energy-efficient.
A Memorable Experience
After an eventful morning of exploration and learning, the students enjoyed their lunch before heading back, carrying valuable lessons and unforgettable memories from their visit to Organo Antharam.
The visit to Organo Antharam was not just an educational excursion but an eye-opening journey into the future of sustainable living, leaving a lasting impact on their perspective toward eco-conscious urban development.
Organo Et School empowers people to embrace eco-living mindsets, behaviors, and habits. We recognize that for any positive impact to be sustainable, it must be long-term and inter-generational.
Organo Et School is a learning initiative set up by Organo in 2017 and has been facilitating field visits and workshops for Schools and Interest Groups. Organo Et School, an experiential learning initiative by Organo since 2017, has impacted over 8000 students, 2000 adults,1250 community residents, and 500 corporate employees.
