On 8th Dec 2022, a pleasant Thursday morning, Organo Et School Children’s Farm Campus welcomed students from Ekam School, a school focused on developing a lifelong love for learning in every child. All of them came to the farm with their teachers and helpers, as they were children aged 7-14 years with varied needs.
The OES team was very happy to welcome them and to offer a unique farm experience. Mr. Venkatesh Nallamilli, OES Farm Manager, spoke to them about the farm and the activities involved in growing crops on the farm. They all listened to him very intently, while enjoying the refreshments served to welcome them.
The farm tour included a walk-about around the vegetable beds, across the onion and carrot fields, along the cabbage and beetroot raised beds and more. This was both a joyful and educative activity for the children.
Harvesting made easy
They were guided on harvesting crops. When they plucked fresh green chilies from the chilly plants, it was a new experience for them. The touch and feel of vegetables, plants, and soil was a pleasant change for them, it being the first time for some of them.
After completing the farm tour, all of them came back and settled for the next experience and look excited about it. Venkatesh made them all comfortable and explained the next activity which was harvesting the microgreens of methi plants. He explained the benefits of having microgreens in meals and the ease of cultivating them even inside the homes. All the kids got up, took the small blunt plastic scissors, and with the help of teachers and helpers started cutting the 7-8 cm long microgreens. All of them enjoyed this activity.
Later Garima Goel, Program Co-Ordinator OES, prepared small brown paper bags packed with micro greens and fresh chilies for them to take back home. Even the teachers and all the helpers enjoyed harvesting the microgreen and liked the idea of incorporating microgreens into the diet. And they all took microgreens with them to use in their day’s meals. It was definitely a special day for OES because it was the first microgreens harvesting program at OES farm and was a huge success.
As we came to the end of this program, with the kids enjoying the payasam arranged for them by OES, it was a very satisfying and happy experience for everybody involved. All the kids were presented with pots of microgreens growing within. Finally, all of them boarded their school bus to head back to Hyderabad city, bidding goodbye to OES Farm and the OES Team.
