All the Be a Farmer program participants ran up to their farm patches to see vegetables growing on the plants they have been tending to. A Sunday morning, 4th Sept. 2022, was a pleasant day for young farmers, on the OES farm.  They were very happy to see the green chilies, radishes, and small round and green tomatoes on these plants.

Shilpa Teja their farm coach saw the excitement on the young farmers’ faces. She explained to them how to identify the fully ripe tomatoes and mature chilly, okra and radishes from not-so-ready ones.

Following her instructions, all of them carefully started harvesting the chilies and radishes. And decided not to pluck the tomatoes which were still not fully ripe.

Having filled the harvest bags with the vegetables all of them were eager for the next activity. Shilpa asked them all to open the Farm logbooks to the farm money management page. She then explained how to assess the cost of raw materials used in their respective patches and add them all up.
Then she helped them with the prices of the vegetables in the market at present for radishes, okra, and Chilly. She then explained to them how to take out the profits for the produce per vegetable for their patch. The children followed her very attentively and did all the calculations with full interest.
All in all, it was a very educative and learning-oriented session for kids. They all participated fully in this interactive and practical money management orientation. Most of them gave very innovative and interesting suggestions for running a farm profitably in the future.
